The winter is fast approaching and the Prestige Traditional Windows and Doors team are here with some useful tips on how to keep your house warm through window and door replacements or enhancing the efficiency of your current ones.
1. Choose energy-efficient windows:
When selecting new windows, opt for energy-efficient. UPVC windows do not act as a natural insulator compared to wooden windows. Wooden windows absorb and retain heat keeping your house at a comfortable temperature all year round and most importantly, they keep the warm in during those colder months.
2. Consider double glazing:
Approximately 18% of the total heat loss from a typical house is through windows.
Double glazing involves using two layers of glass with a gap in between to provide better insulation. This can significantly reduce heat loss and keep your home warmer during the winter months. Double glazing is particularly effective in reducing drafts and cold spots near windows.
Triple-glazing is also an option, employing a third layer of glass however the difference between double-glazing and triple-glazing is negligible.
3. Ensure proper installation: Proper installation is crucial for the effectiveness of new windows. Make sure the windows are installed by our professionals to ensure a proper fit and seal. A well-installed window will minimise draughts and prevent heat loss.
4. Seal any gaps or draughts: Even with new windows, we know how essential it is to check for any gaps or draughts around the window frames. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any openings and prevent cold air from entering your home.
5. Consider secondary glazing: If you have existing windows that are not double glazed, you can consider adding secondary glazing. This involves fitting a second layer of glass or acrylic to the inside of your existing windows, creating an additional layer of insulation.
